How it is used
- The formal 'to lose (an item), mislay' - 遗失护照 (yíshī hùzhào) lose one's passport; 遗失声明 (yíshī shēngmíng) a lost-item notice.
- Written/official register - reports, notices, insurance. In everyday speech people say 丢 (diū) or 丢了.
- Only for objects you inadvertently lose, not for losing a game or a person.
