How it is used

  • To give ground in a dispute or negotiation - 双方都不肯退让 (shuāngfāng dōu bù kěn tuìràng) neither side would back down.
  • Compare 让步 (ràngbù, make a concession): near-synonyms, but 退让 leans toward yielding your position/principle, 让步 toward granting a specific concession in bargaining.
  • Also literal: 退让一步 (tuìràng yí bù) step aside / give way.
