How it is used
- To go out and receive someone arriving - 去机场迎接客人 (qù jīchǎng yíngjiē kèrén) go to the airport to meet the guests. Implies effort and warmth, unlike neutral 接 (jiē).
- Extends to abstract 'welcoming' what's coming - 迎接新的一年 (yíngjiē xīn de yī nián) welcome/greet the new year; 迎接挑战 (yíngjiē tiǎozhàn) rise to meet a challenge.
- Warmer and more formal than 欢迎 (huānyíng), which is the spoken 'welcome!' you say to someone.
