- To recognize / identify a specific person or thing - 请辨认一下照片上的人 (qǐng biànrèn yíxià zhàopiàn shàng de rén) please identify the person in the photo.
- About matching something to a known identity, often when it's unclear (字迹模糊,难以辨认 the handwriting is too blurry to make out).
- 辨认 = pin down which one it is; 辨别 = tell categories/qualities apart. Both share 辨, distinct from 辩 (to argue).
