How it is used
- Three shades. Literally 'read a book': 他在读书 (tā zài dúshū) he's reading.
- Widely 'to study' or 'to be in school': 在北京读书 (zài Běijīng dúshū) study in Beijing. 读 can also mean read aloud, contrasting silent 看书 (kàn shū).
