How it is used
- A witness who gives testimony - 出庭作证的证人 (chūtíng zuòzhèng de zhèngrén) a witness who testifies in court.
- Legal register. Distinct from 目击者 (mùjīzhě, eyewitness to an event): a 证人 is someone giving formal testimony, not necessarily who saw it.
- Pairs with 作证 (zuòzhèng, to testify).
