- To discuss / talk about (often behind someone's back) - 议论纷纷 (yìlùn fēnfēn) abuzz with talk.
- Frequently carries a whiff of gossip or public comment: 别在背后议论人 (bié zài bèihòu yìlùn rén) don't talk about people behind their backs.
- As an essay type, 议论文 (yìlùnwén) is an argumentative/expository essay. Contrast neutral 讨论 (tǎolùn), to discuss constructively.
