How it is used

  • To step in bravely and do what's right when someone is in danger - 见义勇为的英雄 (jiànyì-yǒngwéi de yīngxióng) a have-a-go hero.
  • From the Analects; strongly praising, often used of a passer-by who intervenes to help a stranger.
  • The moral opposite of 袖手旁观 (standing by and doing nothing) - 不能袖手旁观 (bù néng xiùshǒu-pángguān) can't just stand by.
