How it is used
- Legal term for the defendant / the accused - 被告出庭 (bèigào chūtíng) the defendant appears in court.
- 被 (by) marks the passive: the one *being* sued/charged. Its opposite is 原告 (yuángào, the plaintiff) - 原告律师 (yuángào lǜshī) the plaintiff's lawyer.
