How it is used
- 'Clearly/obviously' - asserting an evident fact, usually against a contradiction: 你明明知道 (nǐ míngmíng zhīdào) you obviously know, 明明是他的错 (míngmíng shì tā de cuò) it's plainly his fault.
- An adverb carrying a tone of exasperation or insistence that something is undeniably so.
- Often sets up a 'but' contrast: 明明……却…… (clearly X, yet Y).
