How it is used
- To search (a database, the web, an area) - 搜索信息 (sōusuǒ xìnxī) search for information; 搜索引擎 (sōusuǒ yǐnqíng) search engine.
- Systematic searching, esp. online or a search operation (search-and-rescue 搜救). More technical than 找 (zhǎo, to look for) - you 搜索 a database but 找 your keys.
- 搜 (to seek) + 索 (to seek out).
