How it is used
- To postpone / put off - 会议推迟到明天 (huìyì tuīchí dào míngtiān) the meeting is postponed to tomorrow.
- 推 (push) + 迟 (late); pushing an event to a later time.
- Opposite 提前 (tíqián) 'move earlier'. Near-synonym 延期 (yánqī) 'extend/defer', more formal; 推迟 is the everyday 'push it back' - 提前出发 (tíqián chūfā) set off early.
