How it is used
- To conjecture/infer from evidence - 据此推测 (jùcǐ tuīcè) infer from this, 只是推测 (zhǐshì tuīcè) it's only a guess.
- Both verb and noun; means reasoned speculation based on clues (推 push/reason + 测 measure), not wild guessing.
- Contrast 猜 (cāi, guess) which is more casual, and 判断 (pànduàn, judge/conclude) which is firmer.
