How it is used
- To break/smash, and figuratively to break through - 打破纪录 (dǎpò jìlù) break a record; 打破沉默 break the silence.
- Very productive figuratively: 打破常规 (break with convention), 打破平衡 (upset the balance). The 破 (broken) makes it resultative.
- For literally shattering glass, both 打破 and 打碎 (dǎsuì) work; 打碎 stresses into-pieces.
