How it is used

  • 'Can't be bothered to / not in the mood to' do something - 我懒得跟他解释 (wǒ lǎnde gēn tā jiěshì) I can't be bothered to explain to him.
  • Colloquial; followed directly by a verb phrase. Expresses disinclination out of laziness or dismissiveness, not inability.
  • Note it's not simply '懒 (lazy) + 得'; treat 懒得 as one fixed verb meaning 'to not feel like.'
