How it is used
- To offend or antagonize someone, making them resent you - 我不小心得罪了他 (wǒ bù xiǎoxīn dézuì le tā) I accidentally offended him.
- Interpersonal offense (giving offense to a person), not breaking a rule - that's 违反 (wéifǎn) or 犯法.
- Note the neutral tone 得罪 (dézui) as a polite 'excuse me / no offense'; common warning 别得罪人 (don't make enemies).
