How it is used

  • A business opening its doors, especially a new shop's grand opening - 新店今天开张 (xīndiàn jīntiān kāizhāng) the new shop opens today.
  • Also the first sale of the day: 还没开张呢 (hái méi kāizhāng ne) haven't made a single sale yet - a shopkeeper's lament.
  • Contrast 开业 (kāiyè), which is more formal/official for launching a business or professional practice; 开张 feels shop-floor and colloquial.
