How it is used

  • To interfere / meddle in others' affairs - 不要干涉别人的私事 (búyào gānshè biéren de sīshì) don't meddle in other people's private matters.
  • Strong, often negative: 干涉内政 (interfere in internal affairs) is standard diplomatic language. 干 reads gān here. Also a physics term (光的干涉, interference).
  • Contrast 干预 (gānyù), which can be neutral or even legitimate intervention (政府干预市场); 干涉 usually implies unwelcome, improper meddling.
