How it is used

  • To place your hopes, feelings, or spirit onto something/someone - 父母把希望寄托在孩子身上 (fùmǔ bǎ xīwàng jìtuō zài háizi shēnshang) the parents pin their hopes on their child.
  • Abstract and emotional: the object is 希望 (hope), 感情 (feelings), 理想, not physical items - don't use it for literally mailing something (that's the 寄 in 寄信).
  • Also a noun: 精神寄托 (jīngshén jìtuō) an emotional anchor / something to live for.
