How it is used
- Be afraid, fear - 别害怕 (bié hàipà) don't be scared; 我害怕狗 (wǒ hàipà gǒu) I'm afraid of dogs.
- An emotional state verb; takes the feared thing directly as object. The single char 怕 (pà) does the same job more casually: 怕黑 (pà hēi) afraid of the dark.
- Contrast 担心 (dānxīn, worry about), which is anxiety over an outcome; 害怕 is fear/fright of a thing or situation.
