How it is used
- To swear an oath, especially of office or allegiance - 宣誓就职 (xuānshì jiùzhí) to be sworn into office.
- A ceremonial act: raising a hand and vowing publicly (党员宣誓, 法庭宣誓). It's intransitive-ish - you don't 宣誓 a thing, you 宣誓 to do/uphold.
- Contrast 发誓 (fāshì), the everyday 'I swear!' for personal promises, which is far less formal.
