- 'Outside, the outside' - 在外边等 (zài wàibian děng) wait outside.
- Interchangeable with 外面 (wàimiàn). Opposite is 里边/里面 (inside). The bare 外 needs such a suffix to stand alone as a place word - 房间里边 (fángjiān lǐbian) inside the room.
