How it is used
- Sound, or a voice - 大声音 (dà shēngyīn) a loud sound; 她的声音很好听 (tā de shēngyīn hěn hǎotīng) her voice is lovely.
- Covers both physical sound and a person's voice. Contrast 噪音 (zàoyīn, noise) and 音乐 (yīnyuè, music) - 声音 is neutral.
- 两个 shēng-yīn chars both mean sound; 声 also = tone (as in 四声 sìshēng, the four tones).
