- Keep at something without giving up - 坚持锻炼 (jiānchí duànliàn) stick to exercising, 坚持下去 (jiānchí xiàqù) hang in there.
- Also 'insist on' a view/position - 坚持自己的意见 (jiānchí zìjǐ de yìjiàn) stand by one's opinion.
- Contrast 保持 (bǎochí), which is passively maintaining a state (保持安静 keep quiet); 坚持 carries active effort and resolve.
