How it is used
- Means to take to heart / let something bother you, most often used negatively: 别在意 (bié zàiyì) don't take it to heart; 我不在意 (wǒ bú zàiyì) I don't mind.
- Near-synonym 在乎 (zàihu) overlaps heavily but leans more toward 'value/care whether' - 他很在乎你 (he really cares about you); 在意 leans toward being upset or self-conscious about something.
- Object is usually a slight, a flaw, or others' opinions: 太在意别人的看法 (tài zàiyì biéren de kànfǎ) to care too much what others think.
