- Only… (singling one out from a group) - 大家都同意,唯独他反对 (dàjiā dōu tóngyì, wéidú tā fǎnduì) everyone agreed, only he objected.
- Highlights a single exception standing apart from all the rest; more emphatic than 只 (zhǐ). Written-leaning.
