- A guide who leads the way, esp. through unfamiliar terrain - 请了一位当地向导 (qǐng le yí wèi dāngdì xiàngdǎo) hired a local guide.
- Distinct from 导游 (dǎoyóu, a tour guide who narrates sights): 向导 emphasizes route-finding and can be figurative (思想的向导).
