How it is used
- To pass away (of a person) - 他去年去世了 (tā qùnián qùshì le) he passed away last year.
- A neutral, respectful term for human death, appropriate in most contexts; the blunt word is 死 (sǐ), and the very formal one 逝世 (shìshì) is for eminent figures.
- Only for people - an animal or plant 死了, not 去世.
