How it is used
- Works as a linking word between clauses meaning "plus, on top of that": 他很聪明,加上又努力 (tā hěn cōngming, jiāshàng yòu nǔlì) - he's smart, and hardworking on top of it.
- Also a plain verb+complement meaning to add something onto something: 汤里加上一点盐 (tāng lǐ jiāshàng yìdiǎn yán) - add a bit of salt to the soup.
- Distinguish from 加 alone, which is the bare verb "to add"; 加上 stresses the resulting addition being included.
