How it is used
- A classifier prefix meaning 'elementary-level' in education and math - 初等教育 (chūděng jiàoyù) primary education, 初等数学 (chūděng shùxué) elementary mathematics.
- Pairs in a ladder with 中等 (zhōngděng, secondary/intermediate) and 高等 (gāoděng, higher/tertiary).
- Technical, written register; you would not use it to say a task is 'easy' in daily speech - use 简单 (jiǎndān) for that.
