How it is used
- 'Among them / of which' - refers back to a group already mentioned - 我买了五本书，其中三本是小说 (wǒ mǎile wǔ běn shū, qízhōng sān běn shì xiǎoshuō) I bought five books, three of which are novels.
- It always points back to a previously named set; you can't start a sentence with 其中 out of nowhere.
- Written and spoken; a compact way to zoom in on part of a whole. 其中之一 (qízhōng zhī yī) one of them.
