- 'To build/construct' on a large scale - used for major projects: 兴建水坝 (xīngjiàn shuǐbà) to build a dam, 兴建高速公路.
- More formal and grander in scope than 盖 (gài, to build a house) or plain 建; reserved for infrastructure and big facilities.
