How it is used
- The Lantern Festival (15th of the first lunar month), and also the sweet glutinous rice balls eaten then - 吃元宵 (chī yuánxiāo) eat rice balls.
- The festival is fully 元宵节 (Yuánxiāojié); 元宵 alone often means the dumplings, which in the south are called 汤圆 (tāngyuán).
- Here 宵 means night - the festival is the first full-moon night of the year.
