How it is used
- For a business to stop operating - temporarily or for good - 暂停营业 or 停业整顿 (tíngyè zhěngdùn) close for rectification.
- Covers a shop closing for the day, a holiday shutdown, or permanent closure; a sign may read 今日停业.
- Contrast 倒闭 (dǎobì, go bankrupt/fold permanently) - 停业 can be temporary; 歇业 (xiēyè) is similar (cease business).
