- To rest and recuperate, convalesce - 他在乡下休养了一个月 (tā zài xiāngxià xiūyǎngle yīgè yuè) he recuperated in the countryside for a month.
- For recovering health after illness or overwork; also 休养生息 (xiūyǎng shēngxī, let people/economy recover).
- Contrast 休息 (xiūxi, ordinary rest/break); 休养 is a longer restorative period to rebuild strength.
