How it is used
- To attempt (usually something bad), or an (evil) intention - 他企图逃跑 (tā qǐtú táopǎo) he attempted to flee.
- Strong negative connotation; 不可告人的企图 (an ulterior motive). As a noun it means a scheme/design.
- Contrast neutral 试图 (shìtú, try/attempt): 企图 implies wrongdoing or illegitimate aims, 试图 is neutral.
