- At will / arbitrary / any whatsoever - 你可以任意选择 (nǐ kěyǐ rènyì xuǎnzé) you may choose freely.
- Adverb (do freely, without restriction) and math/technical adjective (任意一点 any given point).
- Contrast 随意 (suíyì, casually/as one likes, softer); 任意 stresses no constraints, and in tech means 'arbitrary, any'.
