How it is used
- To lose/misplace (an object, data). 丢失了钱包 (diūshī le qiánbāo) lost a wallet; 数据丢失 (shùjù diūshī) data loss.
- 丢失 is more formal/written than plain 丢 (diū, to lose): 我把钥匙丢了 (colloquial) vs 钥匙丢失 (formal).
- For losing your way it's 迷路 not 丢失; 丢失 is only for physical/data items going missing. Antonym 找到 (zhǎodào) - 找到钥匙 (zhǎodào yàoshi) find the keys.
