How it is used
- The compass direction northeast, and by default the Northeast region of China (Manchuria) - 我是东北人 (wǒ shì dōngběi rén) I'm from the Northeast.
- Chinese orders the axis 东北 (east-north) where English says north-east - the vertical direction comes second. 东北话 (dōngběi huà) is the distinctive northeastern dialect.
