Characters
How it is used
- A written suffix meaning 'whether or not', attached after a word to turn it into an issue in question - 成功与否取决于努力 (chénggōng yǔfǒu qǔjué yú nǔlì) whether or not you succeed depends on effort.
- Formal register; it follows a verb/adjective (是否、正确与否、愿意与否) and the whole phrase acts as a noun/subject.
- Don't use it in casual speech, where 是不是/有没有 do the same job.
Example sentences
- 你成功与否取决于你自身的努力。 Nǐ chénggōng yǔfǒu qǔjuéyú nǐ zìshēn de nǔlì.Whether you succeed or not depends on your own efforts.
