How it is used

  • 'Doesn't count as / isn't really' - 这不算贵 (zhè búsuàn guì) this isn't that expensive, or 不算数 (búsuànshù) it doesn't count.
  • Softens a judgment: 不算 + adjective means 'not particularly, not to the point of' rather than a flat negation.
  • Also 'not be counted in': 他还不算正式员工 (tā hái búsuàn zhèngshì yuángōng) he doesn't yet count as a formal employee.
