How it is used
- To be taken in, fall for a trick - 别上当 (bié shàngdàng) don't be fooled; 上当受骗 (shàngdàng shòupiàn) to be cheated (fixed pairing).
- It's a resultative state ('got duped'), so you say 上了当 (shàngle dàng) 'got taken in'; the 当 can be separated: 上他的当 (shàng tā de dàng) to fall for his trick.
- Focuses on the victim's experience of being deceived, whereas 骗 (piàn) is the act of deceiving from the swindler's side.
