How it is used
- 'To one side, off to the side' - a location word - 站在一旁 (zhàn zài yìpáng) to stand off to the side; 把书放在一旁 (bǎ shū fàng zài yìpáng) to set the book aside.
- Often implies being a bystander, out of the main action - 在一旁看热闹 (zài yìpáng kàn rènao) watching the excitement from the sidelines.
- Near 旁边 (pángbiān, beside) but 一旁 is more literary and stresses 'aside/apart from the center'.
