How it came to be
A jade ornament hung at the waist, with the cord above and below it. The stone was the colour, and the colour took the name; the oldest carving shows it on a standing figure.
How it is used
- The color yellow - 黄色 (huángsè), plus 黄金 (huángjīn) gold, 黄瓜 (huángguā) cucumber, 黄昏 (huánghūn) dusk.
- Careful: 黄色 also means 'pornographic/obscene' (黄色网站 an adult site), so context decides.
- Colloquially 黄了 (huáng le) means a plan fell through - 这事黄了 (zhè shì huáng le) the deal's off.
