How it is used

  • 'To ride astride' - bikes, horses, motorbikes, where you straddle: 骑自行车 (qí zìxíngchē) ride a bike, 骑马 (qí mǎ) ride a horse.
  • Contrast 坐 (zuò) for sitting inside a vehicle - 坐车/坐飞机 (zuò chē / zuò fēijī), never 骑车 for a car.
  • 骑 also means 'straddle/span' - 骑墙 (qíqiáng) to sit on the fence, be non-committal.
