How it is used

  • Mold/mildew: 发霉 (fāméi) to go moldy - 面包发霉了 (miànbāo fāméi le) the bread has gone moldy, 霉菌 (méijūn) mold/fungus.
  • 倒霉 (dǎoméi) 'to grow mold' = to have rotten luck, a very common colloquial complaint: 今天真倒霉 (jīntiān zhēn dǎoméi) what an unlucky day.
  • So beyond literal mold, 霉 is the root of the everyday word for bad luck.
