How it came to be
Two lumps of metal lying in a heap of earth, under a roof-shaped top that once gave the sound. It is metal still in the ground.
How it is used
- Gold/metal, and by extension money. 现金 (xiànjīn) cash, 资金 (zījīn) funds/capital, 黄金 (huángjīn) gold.
- A named sum of money: 奖金 (jiǎngjīn) bonus, 押金 (yājīn) deposit, 租金 (zūjīn) rent.
- As a metal-radical character it also names one of the five elements (五行) and is a common surname (Jīn).
