How it came to be
A figure with a full bag slung across the back, bending under it. The bend is the weight: the character is a posture, not a measurement.
How it is used
- Read zhòng it means heavy or important - 重要 (zhòngyào) important, 严重 (yánzhòng) serious, 体重 (tǐzhòng) body weight.
- Read chóng it means again or to repeat - 重新 (chóngxīn) anew, 重复 (chóngfù) repeat, 重叠 (chóngdié) overlap.
- zhòng-as-'value': 重视 (zhòngshì) attach importance to, 尊重 (zūnzhòng) respect.
- Trap: 重新 (chóngxīn) do over is chóng, never the heavy reading of 重要.
