逢 féng to meet
to happen to meet; chance meeting; to meet by chance
How it came to be
A road with the run into block, two things coming to a point, beside it. Two lines meeting at one spot: a chance meeting, drawn as lines rather than as people.
How it is used
- 'To meet by chance / come upon (an occasion)' - 相逢 (xiāngféng) to meet (often after long apart), 逢年过节 (féngnián-guòjié) at every New Year and festival.
- 每逢 (měiféng) = 'whenever (a certain time) comes around': 每逢佳节倍思亲 (měiféng jiājié bèi sī qīn) at every festival I miss my family all the more.
- 萍水相逢 (píngshuǐ-xiāngféng): strangers meeting by chance like duckweed on water.
