How it came to be

A whole leg: the knee at the top as a square, the shin below it, and the foot turned out at the bottom.

How it is used

  • Two senses: literal 'foot' - 足球 (zúqiú) soccer, 手足 (shǒuzú) brothers; and 'enough/ample' - 足够 (zúgòu) enough, 满足 (mǎnzú) to satisfy.
  • 充足 (chōngzú) 'ample/sufficient', 不足 (bùzú) insufficient - the 'adequacy' thread.
  • 足以 (zúyǐ) 'enough to' + verb: 足以证明 (zúyǐ zhèngmíng) enough to prove.
